Why do you write?
I write because it is an eye popping opportunity to create your own world. You get to live life after life, making your characters suffer perhaps, but redeeming them in the end. It’s not quite like playing God because characters have a habit of becoming real and doing as they please, but in all the ways that count, it is like getting a thousand do-overs. If you didn’t get it right in real life, you can get a do-over in your book.
Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.
I often write military romantic suspense. In order to do research I read widely and in particular I enjoy reading military memoirs. What’s striking is the incredible intelligence and sophistication of the modern US military. They are well-travelled, well-read, super smart, idealistic without in any way being dewy-eyed about the way the world works.
Do you have a favorite motto?
If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.
Do you have a favorite fictional hero?
Jack Reacher, Harry Bosch, Bob Lee Swagger, Roarke. And, well, John McLain of the ‘Die Hard’ series of movies. Delicious hero.
What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?
The Iron King and The Hunger Games.
What would readers be surprised to learn about you?
I’m good with languages, have a real ear for them, but have no musical talent whatsoever. Usually they go hand in hand, but not with me.
Oh man, that’s a hard one. Going back in time, it would be hard to find a period that didn’t oppress women, choke them, take away their voices. And the future—let’s just say I’m not too hopeful about the future. So I choose to stay right here, right now.
Lisa Marie, please share more about NIGHTFIRE, your latest release from Avon Red.
NIGHTFIRE is the third of the Protectors series. Three men from brutal backgrounds who became warriors and protectors. After military service, they founded a highly successful security corporation, but a good portion of the profits is put back into running a sophisticated Underground Railroad for abused women and children running from violence. They use their money and their specialized knowledge to give them new lives.
The three men are Sam Reston, Harry Bolt and Mike Keillor. Unlike Sam and Harry, Mike came from a loving family. Mike witnessed the massacre of his family as a young boy and it turned him into an angry aggressive man, incapable of feeling much beyond a sense of loyalty to Sam and Harry. Love is beyond him. When the men he considers blood brothers find love and establish families of their own, it’s like he is encased in a bubble, unable to connect.
When he does connect, with Harry Bolt’s long-lost sister, Chloe, it is as if he comes to life. When Chloe is threatened, he is willing to fight to the death for her because without her, he might as well be dead.
I noticed that your Protectors series is a highly erotic contemporary suspense. What was it about this genre that piqued your interest?
I honestly cannot imagine a more intense, thrilling, exciting genre. Danger, suspense, dashing courage, deep love, hot sex. You’ve got an exciting book right there.
Name one or two fascinating things you learned while writing your PROTECTOR series that would surprise readers to learn.
I do a lot of research when I write military heroes and every single time I am absolutely blown away at what these men can do. How smart they are, yet how tough they have to be.
Sam Reston was a Navy SEAL. Did you know that Navy SEALs are drown-proofed? HOW they are drown-proofed sounds like utter torture. Before they become SEALs they have to learn to swim with their hands and feet tied. They are thrown into a 9-foot deep pool and bob, float, swim, do backward and forward flips, dive to the bottom of the pool and retrieve an object with their teeth. With hands and feet tied. Amazing.
Harry Bolt was a former Delta Force operator. Deltas are shooters, first and foremost. When they practice hostage rescue in special shooting houses, they practice with live fire.
Okay, I want to give a warm welcome to, Chloe Mason and Mike Keillor. (Waving frantically, trying to get the besotted couple’s attention). I know you two have gone through a lot to get to your happily ever after so I will try to be brief. (Blushes scarlet as she catches the intimate glance between the couple, clears her throat). Okay, so you two are still in the honeymoon stage, I see. I would like to know what each of you thought when you first laid eyes on the other.
Chloe: I thought—that is the most fascinating man I’ve ever seen. Mike: I thought—Holy shit.
Was it love at first sight?
It was certainly fascination at first sight. Hormones started flying madly around. However, as readers know, we were both forced by circumstances to get to know each other as people before we got a chance to go to bed together and a good thing, too. By the time we had sex we were in love.
When you met, did you believe in true love? You can both answer. I’m quite curious to know both of your opinions.
Chloe: Absolutely not. I’d never seen love, in any of its manifestations, between a man and a woman. What I’d seen was frightening and anything but love.
Mike: My father loved my mother. My mother loved my father. Then they died. It took me a long time to realize that love did not mean death, automatically.
Now, back to Lisa Marie
Lisa Marie, what is more difficult to write: an intense sexual scene or a heart-wrenching emotional scene? Why?
Actually, I like to think that my sex scenes ARE heart-wrenching emotional scenes. In my books, each character is for the first time in his or her life having sex with a person they love and it is mind-blowing and scary and exhilarating and destabilizing and crazy-making. All at once.
When you were writing “NIGHTFIRE” did you have music playing in the background? If yes, what type? Does music play an intricate part in your writing?
I generally prefer absolute quiet when I write. But if I feel the need for inspiration I often use movie scores such as Artificial Intelligence or the music for Lord of the Rings. But music is important to my characters.
Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?
Voice, absolutely. A story is just a structure, like a scaffolding. Voice is the heart and soul of a story. When you have the right voice, you are right there, in your characters’ heads.

I know this is a difficult question with there being so many amazing authors out there to choose from but who are some of the GOT-TO-HAVE authors in your TBR pile?
I love thrillers. Authors whose books I will order to be delivered on my Kindle at midnight Seattle time the day of publication: Lee Child, Stephen Hunter, Michael Connelly, any Robert Crais with Joe Pike in it. And I love romantic suspense. A lot of Nora Roberts and every single JD Robb. Maya Banks, Cindy Gerard, and my favorite—Shannon McKenna.
What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?
I’m working on an exciting departure, a new trilogy. Look for Book number one—Heart of Danger—in stores around October.

Overview
Chloe Mason’s childhood memories consist of seemingly endless hospital stays. Now all grown up and healthy, her determination to fill the gaping holes in her past leads her to her long-lost brother, Harry . . . which brings Harry’s friend and business partner, Mike Keillor, crashing into her life and her heart.
Former Marine Force Recon sniper and SWAT officer—a martial arts expert and owner of a successful security company—Mike can deal coolly and efficiently with any threat . . . until he’s blindsided by something he never expected: fierce, fiery passion . . . and love.
But when Chloe inadvertently crosses the Russian mob, Mike realizes that evil is darkening his world once again. He has already lost his family; he will not lose the woman who enflames him, who makes him whole. Failure is not an option.
