Why do you write?
I mostly write because I was having trouble finding stories that pushed ALL my buttons. So I started writing to live in those stories a little longer, and now I find that I can’t stop.
Name one eye-opening thing you learned from your book research.
There’s a city in Pennsylvania that’s been burning underground for 50 years. Haven’t had a chance to use that yet. But I will.
Do you have a favorite motto?
“These two need to make out.”
Do you have a favorite fictional hero?
In recent years, I really loved Jake from DEMON BOUND by Meljean Brook. He’s funny, slightly juvenile, totally hot, and a man in uniform. What’s not to love?
Which fictional character would you hang out with?
Oh man, that’s a tough one. I don’t know if there’s a lot of fictional characters I’d want to hang out with! Most of them have crappy lives (which is what makes them interesting to read about).
What is one of your favorite book covers, your own or someone else’s?
I am totally in love with the Care and Feeding of an Alpha Male cover (the second Bluebonnet book, comes out in October). I also really love the Lora Leigh cover for Hidden Agendas. She’s leading him around by his dog tags! Faint!
What would readers be surprised to learn about you?
I am a big video game nerd. But I don’t know if that’s surprising. Actually, I’m just a gaming nerd in general. I’m pretty good at Magic: The Gathering and once placed at a local tournament. Some dude also gave me his phone number there. I think it was because I was the only chick.
If you could go backward or forward in time which would you chose?
While I think backward would be cool for a REALLY SHORTperiod of time, I think forward is the way to go. I want a hovercar.
Jessica, please share with us more about THE GIRLS GUIDE TO (MAN) HUNTING released by Berkley Heat Group.
The Girl’s Guide to (Man)Hunting is basically all about naughty pictures. No lie! Once upon a time, there were some naughty photos of Miranda and Dane thrown up on the internet. Miranda’s suffered the stigma of those photos for the last nine years. Dane went on to become famous. Now they’re both back in the same town, and Miranda wants to make Dane’s life a living hell, just like he did for her. One problem – he’s still totally hot and she still totally wants him.
I noticed that THE GIRL'S GUIDE TO (MAN) HUNTING is a sassy sexy contemporary. What about this genre that piqued your curiosity to set your latest book?
I’ve always been a fan of contemporaries – but I really like the lighter, sexy ones. No massive angst, drama, or death. Just fun and flirting. Anyhow, I was between projects at the time, and a friend dared me to write a contemporary. She’d read WICKED GAMES (which I self published) and loved it, and thought I should write more contemporaries. It was a challenge to see if I could come up with a plot that didn’t involve vampires or reality TV. And I did! And it was so much fun.
I noticed that your lead hero, Dane Croft is pro-hockey player. Love this. Even more, I love everything about hockey, so it isn’t any wonder that I would ask what it is about the sport of Hockey and its players that sparked your interest. Dish, please! =)
I never watched a bit of hockey until I married my husband. He’s Canadian, so hockey is practically a religion for him. He’s a huge Leafs fan, and I’m a Stars fan (naturally). There’s just something so aggressive and fast-paced about hockey that it pushes all my buttons. What can I say? I love it when they drop the gloves.
Name one or two things you found fascinating in researching for THE GIRLS GUIDE TO (MAN) HUNTING.
If you’re in a survival situation, you can use condoms to carry water as a makeshift canteen. Of course, you’ll probably want to get the non-lubricated ones for that.
Okay, I want to give a warm welcome to, Miranda Hill and Dane Croft. (Waving frantically, trying to get the besotted couple’s attention). I know you two have gone through a lot to get to your happily ever after so I will try to be brief. (Blushes scarlet as she catches the intimate glance between the newlyweds, clears her throat). Okay, so you two are still in the honeymoon stage, I see. I would like to know what each of you thought when you first laid eyes on the other.
Miranda and Dane was it loves at first sight?
Miranda: I totally had a puppy dog crush on him all through high school. I think that’s one reason why it hurt so bad when he ditched me.
Dane: Um. We were in high school. I thought she had a nice rack. Does that help?
Miranda: *thwaps Dane*
When you two first see one another after some time has passed did an instant spark ignite? Would you claim it was love at renewed sight?
Miranda: No! I wanted to punch him after seeing him again. He looked so smug and arrogant. Even if he was handsome.
Dane: Gee. And here I’d been thinking she looked pretty hot after not seeing her for nine years.
Do you believe in true love? You can both answer. I’m quite curious to know both of your opinions.
Miranda: Of course. But it means opening yourself up to the possibility.
Dane: Yup. Her being hot helps things, though.
Miranda: *thwaps Dane again*
Miranda, name the one thing about Dane that you believe won your heart.
Miranda: That he wasn’t the big, stuck-on-himself asshole that I’d always thought. I’d painted him to be this big jerk who didn’t care about women, and he wasn’t like that at all. After that, I had to reassess my initial picture of him.
Dane, name one thing about Miranda that you believe changed your outlook on love.
Dane: After we slept together? She wasn’t interested in telling anyone. Considering that my prior relationships were with a lot of tabloid bunnies and a certain woman that ruined my career? That made me open my eyes.
Now back to Jessica.
Jessica, what is more difficult to write: an intense sexual scene or a heart-wrenching emotional scene? Why?
Heart wrenching emotion, absolutely. Because you have to get the point across without making the dialogue totally corny and overblown. You have to hit just the right nuance of emotion. It’s tricky! I’d much rather write two characters going to town on each other.
When you were writing “THE GIRL'S GUIDE TO (MAN) HUNTING” did you have music playing in the background? If yes, what type? Does music play an intricate part in your writing?
Every book I write comes with its own ‘soundtrack’. Basically it’s the perfect set of songs that puts me in the right frame of mind for that book. Maybe it’s the right mood, or the right bit of twang, or the right kind of emotion. For this book, it was Taylor Swift (I KNOW) and her Speak Now CD. It’s all about guys breaking her heart and falling in love all over again, and the themes were perfect for this book.
Which do you find is most important to you as a writer, voice or story? Why?
I’d have to say voice. I like taking stories that are not necessarily clichéd, but familiar and comfortable, and putting my own fun spin on them. A good writer can make even the most familiar storyline fun. A writer with a terrible voice can’t make the best story entertaining.
Jessica, please share with desperate readers where they can connect with you in cyber world. :)
I’m on Twitter as @jillmyles and Facebook (though I’m bad about checking it!) Also, you can go to my webpage at www.jessica-clare.comand sign up for my newsletter. I ONLY send it out when I have a new release, and I sometimes give away coupons. I’m just saying! I have a few pen names, so that’s my way of keeping it easy for you – just sign up for the newsletter and I’ll remind you when I have a book out. No thinking required! ;)
I know this is a difficult question with there being so many amazing authors out there to choose from but who are some of the GOT-TO-HAVE authors in your TBR pile?
I drop everything for a new Meljean Brook or Kresley Cole. EVERYTHING. Oh, and the next Karen Marie Moning. CAN’T WAIT!
What’s next in the works for you? When can readers expect to see it out on shelves in their local bookstores?
I’m still self-publishing under my Jill Myles pseudonym – look for a few more novellas from me this summer, probably in the time travel and erotic SF fields. This fall, I have two releases as Jessica Sims (for my Midnight Liaisons books) and another Bluebonnet book with Berkley Heat. September and October are going to be really darn busy for me!
Jessica thanks so much for stopping by and chatting with RCJR eZine and Saucy & Sinful readers and myself; it has really been a blast getting to know more about you and your books.
Thank you so much for having me!
Overview
Once, Miranda felt a little exposed…
Miranda Hill can’t believe her eyes—her cocky ex-boyfriend, pro hockey player Dane Croft, is back in Bluebonnet, Texas, after all these years. He ditched her—and their little town—just as some rather shocking photos showed up on the Internet for everyone to see. Miranda wasn’t so lucky. Stuck in Bluebonnet and left to fend for herself, she’s never really shaken the scandal—or his betrayal. After nine long years, Dane’s back, and she has the chance to turn the tables on him…
It’s time she gets even.
Former NHL hotshot playboy Dane Croft has returned home to open a survival training school on an old ranch and reinvent himself. When his former high-school girlfriend enrolls in the program, he has no idea that Miranda’s plan is to get him in a compromising position—not the one he’s imagining, anyway. But soon Miranda realizes that to carry out her deviously sexy revenge, she’ll have to get up close and personal with Dane all over again. Being a good girl got her nowhere for nine years; now it’s time to be a little naughty. But falling in love with the man who broke her heart was never part of the plan…
